What follows is a list of common tasks that can be executed on a Gentoo Linux system. Although they will surely become routine fairly soon, since they are called “common”, it will take some time - hence this reference. Included here are tasks like emerging, unmerging, updating the system, etc. Hopefull they will proove usefull.

I decided to install Gentoo GNU/Linux on my ASUS N10J-A2 netbook. If you are asking “Why Gentoo?” the answer is quite simple: because. The idea was to learn as much about GNU/Linux as possible and a very technical, powerful distribution seemed like the best fit. I know you can get GNU/Linux in a nice package where you do not need to do anything you wouldn't do on Windows (such as Ubuntu, Debian or SuSE), but that wasn't what I wanted. I want to get my hands dirty, I want to dig down deep and eme…

Following the installation you are presented with a maiden operating system - a bootloader, a system logger and a cron deamon, that's all you have. Therefore it is now time to set up some programs and tweak the system to your liking.

to Marek's Linux Wiki. As a GNU/Linux n00b I got tired of asking the same questions over and over again and decided to map my progress of becoming a GNU/Linux user in a Wiki, so I can access the how-to information anytime I wish. The motivation behind this is pretty simple: in working with GNU/Linux there are certain actions that are not common or frequently executed (such as installing the system, setting it up, etc.). And when the time for such an action comes you usually forgot how to do them…

It is entirely possible, especially if you are a GNU/Linux n00b and do not know you PC that well, that you made some errors during the install which only the first boot process reveales. Or you configured something, restarted and now your computer doesn't work like it is supposed to or at all. Those “emergency” situations can usually be solved using the Gentoo Live CD and here are the descriptions and solutions to a couple of them I encountered.
